Amsterdam

August 4, 2010 – 9:26 pm

We arrived in Amsterdam at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday morning.  Our flight was smooth and quite comfortable for an overseas flight.  PJ did great!  I watched a movie and slept for a while.  There were 5+ screaming kids on board (so glad that mine wasn’t one of them).  When we arrived at the Amsterdam airport, a driver was waiting for us and brought us to our hotel, The Hotel Krasnapolsky, in Dam Square. I’ve always wanted to have a driver waiting for me with my name on a sign…..so cool. Anyway, I loved the location of the hotel.  We were so close to everything that Amsterdam has to offer.  And boy does it offer a lot…..ahem, Red Light District….legalized marijuana.  We did not partake in any of the extracurricular activities, but I was curious about the Red Light District and ventured through.  It was interesting……glad that I saw it, but will not be returning. Haha.

We took a canal cruise which was really the best way to see Amsterdam.  I enjoyed seeing the Dutch architecture and the canals offer the cleanest and best views.

We also went and saw the chilling Anne Frank House.  What an intense and unsettling time period.  It was sad to see and I just can’t imagine living like that.  The rooms that the two families lived in were so dark and depressing.  The museum had some of her diary pages on display and quotes throughout the warehouse and living quarters.  I recommend a visit to see it if you are ever in Amsterdam.  It puts things into perspective.  We left Amsterdam on Monday morning via taxi on our way to the big blue boat as PJ calls it.

Dear Blog,

Oh how I’ve missed you……This has been a crazy few months.  It seems like winter turned right into summer.  I apologize for not writing or posting lately, but the most important thing in my life has required a little extra attention.  A couple of months ago, my son PJ, was diagnosed with a severe language delay.  Therefore, I have had to cut a few things out of my life in order to focus on him and his speech therapy.  We are aggressively treating it by working with a fantastic Speech Pathologist THREE TIMES A WEEK!  We also have plenty of homework throughout the week.  I’m thankful that we are able to work on this now before he enters elementary school.  To be honest, I was a little embarrassed to admit that this was going on, but now I’m facing it and doing everything that I can.  It can be frustrating at times, but I also feel that it has been a blessing in disguise to get me off of the computer and to spend more time with him.

I promise to get back on track soon…..For now, here are shots from his four year photo shoot on Siesta Key.  Even if he can’t communicate perfectly, he sure is cute!  :)

    Oh Beth! I was wondering where you have been! So glad to hear you have been spending time with your precious boy. You are so right…there are a lot of wonderful things about stepping away from our jobs and computers!

    Our Declan also has speech issues and has attended speech therapy off and on for about a year. I know it is hard, but hang in there. I have heard so many success stories, and I think we are on our way to being one ourselves. Declan still isn’t at the level of most of his peers, but he is now a chatty, talkative little boy and has come so far so fast! Have fun spending time with him at classes – in two years you will miss these 3 appointments a week. It is incredible how much bonding we experienced with our son just taking him to speech class. :)

    And as usual, PJ rocked the socks off his photo session! :)
